Massage
The practice of massage goes back thousands of years, but in its modern form it was first introduced in Europe in the early nineteenth. Together with exercise, it formed a treatment regime for many conditions, including arthritis and rhematism. Due to the fact that it was practised exclusively in hospitals in those early days it was looked uon with respect. As it gradually became more widely available, though, its application tended to become more casual, and in some cases questionable, and it lost much of its credibility. Fortunately, in more recent times, massage has again become accepted for its therapeutic values.
This may partly result from the increase in popularity of alternative and complementary medicine. However, there is still some way to go for it to achieve full public recognition and to regain the esteem it deserves.

Chinese literature records that massage was used for healing as far back as 3000BC. The Chinese seem to have believed in ‘complete health’ and massage, along with exercise, martial arts and meditation was included in all their health and fitness programmes.
Hindu writing dating from 1800BC indicates that massage was used for weight reduction and to aid sleep, relaxation and combating fatigue. The Hindus were more interested in hygiene than health and so combined massage with bathing and shampooing.
Around 300BC the Greeks started to make use of massage, coupling it with exercise as a regime for fitness. Soldiers were given regular massages to help ease pain and muscle fatigue during training, and also before and after tournaments, Greek ladies associated massage with bathing, and it became a fashionable part of their beauty regimes.
The Greek physician Herodicus (fifth century BC) professed to have had great success in prolonging lives with the combination of massage, herbs and oils. One of his pupils, Hippocrates
