Stress
A client’s lifestyle may have quite an impact on their life, sometimes more than the individual realises. The client may arrive at the salon in a tense or agitated mood or distracted and worried about the time they do not have, but is reluctantly fitting in treatments in a busy schedule! It may not always be so obvious to the therapist as stress can have other effects such lethargy, feeling under the weather or a lack of communication. It is important, thorough consultation, particularly if it is the client’s is first visit to the salon.

I have had many occasions when clients have a thanked me profusely after having a full leg wax or ph eyebrow shape because they appreciated the short time that they had to themselves and that they were being looked after, relaxing of treatments. ]Vly immediate reaction to this was to recommend an aromatherapy massage, relaxing facial or Swedish body massage because the therapeutic effects would be increased tenfold. In addition, I would recommend that the client considered exercise in conjunction with relaxation, as this helps to alleviate some of the effects of stress, increases energy levels and improves the frame of mind.

RELAXATIO N Many clients will suffer from stress to a certain degree, which causes problems such as tension in the muscles. This in turn leads to aches, pains and headaches. Some b’ clients will eat more when under stress, putting on extra weight. This can adversely affect the joints and sn reduce energy levels. They may also find it difficult to sleep, become lethargic and generally feel unfit.
The adrenalin produced when under stress has adverse effects on the body, increasing the heartbeat C1 and stimulating the nerves. Excess adrenalin causes tiredness and irritability
It is veiy important to teach a client how to relax as an antidote to stress. To remove the tension and reduce anxiety will help in eliminating the harmful side effects of too much stress. Relaxation also helps to store up energy* which is required for important issues. It will also help to concentrate the mind and improve quality of life.
During consultation you will need to evaluate the client’s stress level and explain options they will have for relaxation treatment. You may suggest a combination of different forms of relaxation therapy* s but these must be agreed with the client.
There are many relaxing therapies available such as heat, floatation and spa therapy* therapy or facial massage. In addition, you can teach relaxation techniques to the client so they can follow your instructions at home when they have time.
To promote relaxation, you will need: # a warm environment # a quiet room with no distractions • low lighting # comfortable position suited to the client, ported fc>y pillows • loose warm cover if required • relaxation tape playing quietly in the background.
The therapist’s manner must encourage relaxation so your approach will need to be calm and relaxed. Speak quietly with assurance, smile and do not rush the client.
Relaxation techniques
Clients may attend for relaxing treatments, but their lifestyle is particularly hectic and stressful they will need to learn how to relax at home or even at work. Advice about how to relax may be provided in before or after treatment. You will need to make the client aware of the difference in the feeling of tension and relaxation in the muscles, which may be achieved by teaching the client how to contract and relax the muscles, slowly releasing it.
The client will be instructed to contract, tighten and relax individual muscles and muscle groups, working in a sequence from the feet up to the head. Clients will soon learn how to do this themselves with practice.
